Advanced Navigation - Passage Planning


Advanced Navigation Standard

To be able to safely navigate a vessel in all conditions of visibility and weather in accordance with a prepared passage plan, applying the principles and techniques of safe navigation aided by electronic instruments and radar.

To obtain this CYA standard there are five modules that need to be completed:

1. GPS - understanding & operation of Global Positioning System
2. Understanding Electronic Charts
3. Understanding Radar
4. Understanding Marine Weather
5. Advanced Passage Planning & Chart Work. This session will also be the evaluation weekend for the CYA standard

Module 5 Passage Planning

This on the water, practical course is the final component of the CYA Advanced Navigation Standard. It consists of one evening lesson and assignment on Passage Planning, then 2 days spent cruising in Howe Sound while conducting navigation training based on all 5 components of our Advanced Navigation series – Radar, Chart Plotters, GPS and Passage Planning plus Weather Analysis.

Completion of this course and written test awards CYA Advanced Navigation Standard.

Format: Friday lecture the week prior to sailing is from 6:30-9:30pm; weekend starts the following Friday evening with a pre board at 5pm Friday evening and will end back at Granville Island the following Sunday afternoon by 5pm.
